VIRGINIA SCRAPPERS October, 2011

Posted By on October 22, 2011

Virginia Scrappers continues to be a joyful group for me.  I like it because it is just a group of friends sewing, sharing ideas, laughing and having fun.  No business meetings, no worries about who is doing what for a program – just plain ole fun.

Today was what I call a COZY day – cool outside, cozy inside.  Patsy was working on some beads that I was just absolutely enamored over.  She is making these beads by rolling and gluing old magazine covers and then covering them with a material to make them hard and shiny.  LOOK!

Are these beads amazing?

They are made from triangle slips of magazine pages.

Patsy has a special tool that she uses to keep the HOLE in the bead!

Here they are before the outer coating is on.

I really want to learn to do this for sure.  There is something especially nice about taking material that is going to be tossed out and making it into something ever so nice!

And look what Carmen got as a GIFT from the QUILTED B  when she ordered fabric.  It is a really nice pin cushion.

Carmen got this as a gift when she ordered fabric online

The Quilted Bee

I think I am going to order something – just so I can get one of these darling pin cushions – and the business card is really nice too!

I like Carmen's Sewing kit - it is a little make-up bag - isn't that clever?

Carmen's hand made quilt is growing!

We had so much fun looking at Linda’s daughter’s wedding pictures.

The Groomsmen wore Tennies!

Isn’t this clever – the groom and the groomsmen put on tennis shoes after the wedding!  HOW CUTE!  I think feet pictures are just precious anyway!

And look at this cake – I LOVE IT!

FANTASTIC CAKE

Isn’t this the most beautiful cake ever!!!  I enjoyed seeing the pictures!

I worked on my Scrappy Grandmother’s Flower Garden Hexagons today – I think I made quite a few.  It is a nice hand work project.  I didn’t take any pictures – but when I start sewing them together, I will share!

It was a good day – very relaxing and lots of fun.

The only bad part about the day was that I WANTED TO GO TO HOBBY LOBBY – our new store here in Midlothian.  I left the group fun a bit early especially so I could stroll up and down EVERY AISLE at Hobby Lobby.  Well,  I drove ALL THE WAY to the end of Midlothian Turnpike and I just never did see it – so I turned around and drove all the way back…..and still didn’t see it.  BUMMER.

When I got home I GOOGLED HOBBY LOBBY and discovered it was on HULL STREET – no wonder I couldn’t find it on MIDLOTHIAN TURNIKE.  SIGH….guess I will save that for another day. 🙂

A VERY GOOD PART ABOUT TODAY THOUGH was that Grandangel Leanna got her learner’s permit!  YEAH!  And isn’t this the cutest little Metal Diet  Coke Bottle EVER!  I haven’t seen these before!!!  🙂

Leanna got her Learner's Permit!

Richmond Modern Quilt Guild October, 2011 Meeting

Posted By on October 22, 2011

How would I describe last night’s Richmond Modern Quilt Guild Meeting ?  Creativity, Chatter, Chortle, Careful Beading, Catherine but no Carmen, Chaos and Conga Lines (not really – I just got carried away with my C-Words – playing WORD WITH FRIENDS WILL DO THAT TO YOU!!)  We learned PEYOTE BEADING from Catherine.  I am excited to practice this a bit more.  If you missed the meeting or need a refresher course I found a YOUTUBE tutorial!

We also had one of the BEST Show and Tells ever.  Cheryl’s landscape beaded buildings wall quilt is quite a Memory Masterpiece!  PRE-SCHOOL CHILDREN painted the fabric that was used in the buildings!

Check out the pictures!!  Oh yes, and about the feet pictures.  SOMEONE’s FEET – someone who loves red and has red shoes – were having an under the table sporting event and I just had to capture the moment!

I hope you enjoy the pictures – the last ones show our BEADING PROJECT – thanks Catherine!

And now for the SAD part of the evening…….the CHIASMIC ENDING (loosely speaking – sort of.)  Someone picked up my brown envelope *that I worked so hard to get, by the way LOLL.  So now someone has two ROUND ROBIN projects to do and sao has ZERO.  Oh well, I tried!!!

What’s on my Design Floor Monday, October 17, 2011

Goodness, as I was writing the title for this Post, it just hit me that October is half over…..how does this happen?  Do you ever have this JOLT about the date?  I do this every year around Thanksgiving……..about a week before I suddenly realize that I need to hurry up and make my annual turkey sausage!!!  🙂

OK – onward – before October is TOTALLY over….LOL!

First – I finished putting the binding on sao’s Road to Brownwood Texas on Saturday while sewing with GHOULFRIENDS!  🙂  Thanks, Judy Laquidara, for this lovely design!  I am still in awe that she designed AND SHARED this pattern in the midst of one of the most MEMORABLE MOVES in history!

I don’t think that I have EVER laughed so much at a blog post!

What is on my design floor this week is my VINTAGE HALLOWEEN QUILT that I am hand quilting……let’s just say that I am practicing my hand quilting.  Will my stitches ever get small and even??????

Vintage Halloween - Hand Quilting

My first hand quilted Halloween Panel took me two years!  Yes, I said PANEL!!!  LOL.  I guess it might take me TEN YEARS to hand quilt a regular bed sized quilt.  Surely I will get faster with practice.  The Powhatan Quilters are having a hand quilting lesson November 7 – I will be sure to pay attention!   :):)

Ghouls and Quilting and Friends, OH MY

Posted By on October 15, 2011

I really enjoy FALL and HALLOWEEN is just so much fun.  However, I can’t remember when I have been to a HALLOWEEN EVENT as an adult…..maybe never before.   But after today I can add GHOULFRIENDS QUILTING DAY as one of my FAVORITE THINGS!

The Queen of PARTY PLANNING just outdid herself.  Miss Catherine is indeed a professional when it comes to DECKING THE HALLS!  The GHOULFRIENDS had a great gathering the past two days.    I had to work on Friday; however I did get to spend Saturday celebrating life with some great friends.

To begin with, the decorations were truly a feast for the eyes.  I just couldn’t stop looking at everything!   There were pumpkins and gourds and bugs, OH MY……and candles, and crafts and spiders screaming from up high!  Plants, and puzzles and spooky music too…….is there anything that Miss Catherine can not do????

When I walked in this little critter squealed at me and started climbing up the door!  Yes, I think I did scream a little!

Since Catherine USES EVERYTHING to turn into a nifty crafty item – someone gave her this little FREEBIE….wonder what she will make with it!!!

Snoopy had a song and dancing ears!

There were craft tables galore!

We had so much food, candies, and goodies; and Catherine made wonderful quesadillas for lunch!  I may not eat again for a week …… or more!

I had LOTS of these on mine!

Isn’t it looking yummy?

So cute - all cut into neat little wedges!

Lamps and goodies - I couldn't stop looking at it all

Catherine got gifts (an origami bowl from Cooper)

Carmen worked on her beautiful handmade quilt

Our great leader taught us to make cards and magnets!

Here's the card that I made!

Here's my Magnet!

OK – I must admit that Catherine had to do a “BIT OF WORK” on my magnet after I got carried away with the glue and made a BIG MESS!

We had a great time playing games too.  I was not good at all with the paddle ball….in fact I managed to hit myself a couple of times!!!!  In case you didn’t figure it out – I am in costume…..I am a bat!  Yes, a BATTY BAT!

Carmen was good at the paddle ball game

We did have lots of fun playing the word games though!  You are NEVER too old to play games and get prizes!!!

Love our pens!!!!

OK – so back to the crafts……Catherine’s pieces were absolutely wonderful!

Catherine's Card

Debbie's Magnet is spectacular

Debbie - in her organizational mode!

Yes, we played games, and we made fun new things…..and we also got some of our own projects done too!

Erica was working on a beautiful piece – an international exchange.  Someone is going to be VERY HAPPY!

Beautiful work

I had fun working on my hand quilting…..maybe it will be finished by NEXT HALLOWEEN!

sao's hand quilted VINTAGE HALLOWEEN QUILT

The day went by so quickly – we had great fun laughing, eating, playing with glue and sewing.  THANKS CATHERINE!

Halloween and Turning 12

Posted By on October 14, 2011

I am so excited – I  FOUND THE HAND QUILTED HALLOWEEN QUILT that I made ….. AND LOST!  I had packed it with the 5 boxes of Halloween decorations last year!  WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED!

The quilt is a PUMPKINS GONE WILD panel by Moda and I love it.  I thought a panel would be a good thing to practice hand quilting on!

Hand Quilted Halloween

I love decorating for Holidays….it just makes me SOOOOOO HAPPY!  See that little white pear on the table…..I made that *with Catherine’s expert instruction* while on retreat in Williamsburg last month.

It's beginning to look a lot like FALL!

There is ONE MORE HAPPY THING to celebrate today.  Grandangel Sarah is 12.  She was so excited for her birthday that she woke up at 5:40 am instead of her regular 6:00 time!  She came out of her room smiling and said, “GRANDMA, QUICK, LIGHT THE CANDLES!”

The candles are lit!

I always light the birthday year number of candles (this year there are 12) and have them on the breakfast table.  It is so much fun and it gives me an EXCUSE to shop at the Yankee Candle store!

Birthday candle is in the cake!

OK – so her morning present is on her chair, the 12 candles are burning and the birthday cake candle is lit…..time for Sarah!

Grandangel Sarah is 12

Does this look like a happy face, or that!!!

The IPOD Touch is a hit

Her DPoppa programmed her IPOD TOUCH so it was ready with ITunes!

Purple Zebra Cover

When you have a purple zebra cover on your IPOD Touch, it just HAS to be a good day.  Since I don’t have one (a cover or an IPOD TOUCH) I am just going to have a good day anyway.

I HOPE YOU HAVE A GOOD DAY TOO!
