Third Time is the Charm

Posted By on October 25, 2011

Do you remember my talking about TRYING to go to the new Hobby Lobby in Midlothian, VA on Saturday?  I was TOTALLY on the wrong street (Midlothian Turnpike instead of Hull.)  My friends told me it was by the “new”  Wal-Mart and the car dealerships,  but I have geographical and spatial difficulties – and perhaps other “difficulties” as well because I keep thinking that the Wal-Mart on MIDLOTHIAN TURNPIKE is the new one…..NOT!

Anyway – after driving up and down Midlothian Turnpike on Saturday, I finally  just GAVE UP!  I even left my Virginia Scrappers meeting a bit early to allow for extended AISLE BY AISLE shopping time.

Sunday (after first GOOGLING THE ADDRESS OF THE NEW HOBBY LOBBY to put into my GPS) I set out with high hopes – FINALLY – to get to see the new Hobby Lobby.

EXCITEMENT - I found it!

Here it is – I whipped out my camera – as I always do when I am about to do something exciting.  CLICK…..ok…..ready to go inside. I was so excited that I forgot to notice where I parked my car!

OH NO - closed on Sundays

Groan…….and did you notice that there were other cars in the parking lot?  There was a steady stream of potential shoppers walking to the door – only to read the sign and sadly walking back to their cars.   GOODNESS GRACIOUS – I am all for worship – but I hadn’t anticipated this one!

Well, they say that MISERY LOVES COMPANY – but I didn’t feel all that wonderful – and the other SAD SHOPPERS did nothing to cheer me up either.  :):):)

Monday was SWEET FROG day  (Grandangel Cooper’s school was benefitting from the frozen yogurt sales for the day) and HOBBY LOBBY was in the same area – so I decided to try it ONE MORE TIME!  If I didn’t meet with success, I could still cheer myself up with a cup of frozen yogurt smothered with fruit and nuts!  LOVE SWEET FROG – it is on my LIST OF FAVORITE THINGS!

SWEET FROG

Well, as they say – the THIRD TIME IS THE CHARM…..I found HOBBY LOBBY and I got into HOBBY LOBBY!

AND……..EVERYTHING WAS ON SALE.   It was a feast for the eyes!

If you decide to go, sign up for the e-mails and you will get the weekly 40% off coupon in the mail.  (Thanks for that tip Kathy O.)

I thoroughly enjoyed myself but I couldn’t help but wonder if they are going to be able to compete in the local market, because Hobby Lobby doesn’t accept the 10% off Quilter’s Card Plan that Joann’s and Hancock’s do…..and from what my humble eye could behold I didn’t  think they had many things that the others did not have.  I don’t imagine that many serious quilters would shop there for fabric.

However they do score high on customer service.  There were at least THREE times as many employees as customers in there on Monday, and they were all so ready and willing to help.  I even found one nice guy who could translate the GERMAN on the package of some modeling clay that I was trying to purchase.  THERE WAS NOT ONE WORD OF ENGLISH on this package and I needed to know if it was the air or oven dry type.  WHERE ELSE COULD YOU FIND A GERMAN TRANSLATOR FREE OF CHARGE!

Sales!

HM….I wonder if PURPLE PANDA QUILTS would accept store bought Christmas Stockings  for the foster children – there are some cute ones here!  I will have to ask her!

OOOOOPS

I was having such a wonderful time until I saw this little display….

…..and that made me REMEMBER that I have not completed even one pair of knitted socks.  I did get motivated to make my second sock – but now I can’t find the first one…….so that put a damper on my WILL TO CONQUER!  🙂

SO – to knit socks or not to knit socks – that is the question.  If I SAY YES, then I need to buy sock yarn and start over.  I need to think hard about this question because January 1st is when I make my TO DO LIST for 2012.  Knitting a pair of socks has been on that TO DO LIST for more years than I can even remember ……. and I am SO CLOSE to doing it……..so close…….

AT LEAST I HAVE A PICTURE of the one sock that I knitted – and I am sure that I put it in a LOGICAL PLACE.  I am SO ORGANIZED that everything is put away – I just need a system for KNOWING WHERE I PUT THINGS AWAY!  loll

MY LOST SOCK

OK – so I  have decided (I think fast!) – IF I find the first sock, then I will finish the second.  Look how far I am on the  second one!

Sock #2

Serendipity and Artemis

Posted By on October 25, 2011

Life is like a box of chocolates…..YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING WHEN YOU WAKE UP IN THE MORNING!  LOL

Grandangel Sarah has Latin Club after school today and they can dress as a Greek Goddess (or God if they are not female)  if they wish.  Sarah just made arrangements to go to LC last night, so we have been engaging in some LAST MINUTE COSTUME CREATION.

The serendipity part?  Sarah stepped on a plastic hanger this morning and the RESULT turned into her bow!!  I wrapped some twine around each end of the broken hanger and secured it with double knots and then wrapped the ends with rubber bands!  lol.  I told Sarah that she probably wouldn’t be doing much HUNTING with this one today…:)  HM….I doubt if they had blue bows either – but oh well, this is the NEW ARTEMIS!

Sarah's BOW for ARTEMIS

Since she won’t be doing any serious FOR REAL hunting, Sarah is taking her own hunting props.

Artemis couldn't really shoot this cute little fox!

So here is the rest of the costume….

My skirt - that she will secure with a belt!

Sarah's white sweater and Sister Leanna's HUNTING NECKLACE!

Sarah made the arrows

One more thing - a last minute bag for the arrows

TA DA - ready for the hunt

SO – this was the CHALLENGE for the day – what challenges are you accepting today?

And – just in case you wanted to know WHO ARTEMIS WAS….here you go!  🙂

ARTEMIS was the great Olympian goddess of hunting, wilderness and wild animals. She was also a goddess of childbirth, and the protectress of the girl child up to the age of marriage. Her twin brother Apollon was similarly the protector of the boy child. Together the two gods were also bringers of sudden death and disease–Artemis targetted women and girls, and Apollon men and boys.

In ancient art Artemis was usually depicted as a girl dressed in a short knee-length chiton and equipped with a hunting bow and quiver of arrows.

Christmas Stockings for Kids

Posted By on October 23, 2011

One of the members of the Richmond Modern Quilt Guild told us Friday night about a wonderful way to help children.

Lyanna of PURPLE PANDA QUILTS  works with the Bair Foundation .    They provide Christmas stockings for foster children.  Many of these children have been abused and neglected.  Go check out the link below.

http://www.bair.org/

If  you are interested in doing something memorable for a child who has few advantages in life, here is an idea.  Go to the link below – PURPLE PANDA QUILTS and you will find tutorials for how to make Christmas Stockings!  There is even a GIVEAWAY for EARLY BIRD CONTRIBUTORS.

http://purplepandaquilts.blogspot.com/2011/10/stockings-for-kids-early-bird-giveaway.html

Here are some more details that I got from PURPLE PANDA QUILTS blog.

The details:

From October 1 – Dec 1, I will be hosting a stocking drive to benefit the foster children of Central Virginia. As part of this drive, I will be weekly (on tuesdays) posting tutorials for various stocking patterns – some even contributed by your favorite bloggers — and there will be a giveaway on Dec 1 for those who have participated with all sorts of great prizes.

There is a flickr group where I ask that you please post any pictures of the stockings you have made using the patterns, as well as pictures of stockings you plan to donate. This is also where I ask that you sign up if you are planning on donating a stocking. It will also be a great source of inspiration for your holiday sewing.

I ask that all stockings be mailed to me by no later than December 1, 2011. This is to ensure that we have enough time to fill them and distribute them to the children before Christmas. For information about where to mail please contact me via email (PurplePandaQuilts(at)gmail(dot)com) or flickr (PurplePandaQuilts).
