Virginia Scrappers November Meeting

Posted By on November 28, 2011

We had fun Saturday morning sewing at the church……I love my Virginia Scrappers group.  No meetings – no business plan – just meeting to share and sew once a month!

Look what Patsy finished!  It is a Connecting Threads kit – and she did some revision to make it unique.  (Sorry it took so long to get the picture up, Carmen – I have been having sick kitty duties the past 2 days!)

Patsy's Connecting Threads kit - revised

Look what else Patsy is making!  I want to learn to do this.  I think I like it better than the traditional cloth bowls!

Catherine's CHRISTMAS CAR

Catherine popped in for a minute and I just had to take a picture of her car – all decorated for Christmas…isn’t that cute!

She also surprised me with new additions to my MR CLICKER FAMILY…..I use these instead of “bells” at school…..and they work wonders!  THANK YOU CATHERINE…they are ever so cute!

New Mr. Clicker Friends!

Here are some other delightful projects …. and I worked on my hand quilting (maybe my new Vintage Halloween panel will be finished by NEXT YEAR!)

Isn't this a cute block!

Beautiful half-square triangles

We will meet Dec. 17th next month and I predict there might be some last minute Christmas projects going on then!  🙂

Turkey Sausage Alterations – 2011

Posted By on November 23, 2011

Grandangel Sarah and I made turkey sausage today.  I usually check all of my spices BEFORE mixing the sausage, but this year I did not.  THIS YEAR I WAS OUT OF SEVERAL OF THE ITEMS THAT I HAVE BEEN PUTTING IN MY TURKEY SAUSAGE since 1964….

Grandangel Sarah is eating olives and reading my sausage recipe

We are missing ingredients!

So, did I go to the store and buy what we needed.  NO…..being the adventurous person that I am I just made substitutions!

MAD SCIENTISTS MAKING UP A NEW RECIPE

We have no dried crushed red pepper – no problem – we will leave it out (my DD complains that it is too hot anyway!)

No tarragon…..no problem, we used Steak Rub – Grill Mates.

No white pepper….no problem,  we used fresh ground black pepper!

No celery salt …..we used Lawry’s seasoned salt.

No liquid smoke……THIS WAS THE INGREDIENT THAT ALMOST SENT ME TO THE STORE!  But we substituted Blackened Seafood Seasoning and Sarah added an extra T of barbecue sauce too.

Grandangel Sarah is stirring the brew....

So we mixed and rolled the sausage into little rolls….wearing baggies because NEITHER OF US WILL TOUCH RAW MEAT (I know……pretty silly…..but true!)

Rolling the sausage!

All ready to be baked!

Did you notice that little black thing in one of the sausage rolls?  Sarah got so inspired by our impromptu recipe alterations that she threw in a few black olives…….so like the little baby doll baked into the KING CAKE during Mardi Gras…..we had a little olive baked in our sausage.  Sarah said that the person who got the olive would get a prize.  SHE HID THE OLIVE IN PLAIN SIGHT SO SHE COULD BE THE ONE TO GET IT!

We had lots of fun making the sausage…..and guess what……it is the best that we have ever made…..so I am including our REVISED RECIPE HERE!

sao’s Turkey Sausage (made since 1964 – revised in 2011)

5 lbs ground turkey (do not use white meat – too dry)

1 T Parsley

1 T Cilantro

1 T Curry Powder

1 T Chili Powder

1 T Garlic Powder

1 T Boston Jerk

1 t Mustard Seed  (one teaspoon – usually I use 3 tablespoons)

1 T Oregano

1 T Steak Rub (Grill Mates)

1 T Lawrys Seasonsed Salt

1 T 21 Season Salute (from Trader Joe’s)

5 drops Tabasco (I usually use 10)

1 T Blackened Seafood Seasoning

2 T Teriyaki

2 T Soy Sauce

1 T Worcestershire Sauce

2 T Italian Dressing

3 T Barbecue Sauce

Throw in a few sliced black olives – or anything else that happens to inspire you at the moment!   🙂

Mix well – roll into logs

Bake in 250 degree oven

Turn and Drain every 30 minutes

Takes about 3 hours

Here are my first 16 hourglass blocks…..we need 224.  I think they are adorable……and the little block measures 2 1/2″ square!

I have all of my 448 pairs cut – so now back to the sewing machine to finish Clue 1 before Clue 2 comes out next Friday!  I just LOVE Bonnie’s Mystery Quilts.  You never know what it is going to look like in the end – but if it is a Bonnie Quilt, you know it will be WONDERFUL!

Here is what I am doing!  See this stack of fabric….that is my ORCA BAY 1 Mystery Quilt designed by Bonnie Hunter.  The first clue (it came out Nov. 18)  is to cut 448 pairs of 1 1/2″ pieces using a Companion Angle and then we make hourglass blocks.  SO….onward I go!  🙂  My hourglass blocks will be blue and the light white/creams.    The next clue comes out Friday…….BLACK FRIDAY…….:)  You can play along if you go to www.quiltville.com and on Bonnie’s Blog you will find the Orca Bay Mystery link!

Since it is getting close to Christmas (UNBELIEVABLE) I decided that my design wall would include PILLOWCASES!

Here is a king-size one….love the little snowmen!

King Size - Very WINTERY!

And TA DA – while waiting for Bonnie Hunter’s new QUILTVILLE MYSTERY to start on November 18th – I decided to make pillowcases to match my ORCA BAY 1 Mystery Quilt.  My quilt colors are Barn Red, Blue, and Butterscotch with a background of light beige.   This was a little TEST to see if I liked my color choices.

I am going to see what else I can put together to make cute pillowcases this week!
