FRUITCAKE…….gone awry……

Posted By on December 4, 2011

I am one of the few people in the world who TRULY LOVES FRUITCAKE.  I anticipate the holidays because I know it will be time for fruitcake – can you believe it!  ONCE, YEARS AGO, I tried to make fruitcake but it didn’t turn out well, so I just decided to buy my fruitcake at COSTCO (it is really really really good, too!)

This year, I decided to make fruitcake – and take one to Kansas City to surprise my daddy for his 90th birthday!)

Doesn’t this batter look wonderful?

YUMMY

I used 6 lbs of fruit (cherries, cranberries, pineapple, dates,  and some “fruitcake mix”) and 3 cups of walnuts…..YUM…..I was so excited just looking at the batter!

Ready for the oven

SO FAR SO GOOD!

One hour later

Now it just has to cool for 10 minutes and then…..TA DA…..it is officially a fruitcake!

oops (this one won't be going to KC!)

It fell apart!  Oh no !

This one won't be going to KC either!

I am not even going to show you the picture of the third one……but my daddy won’t be seeing a fruitcake for his birthday!  You can’t give someone a crumbled up cake – right?

Is there anything that I can do to fix it?  Can you ice fruitcake?  HELP!!!!

I won’t be sharing the recipe……..maybe I will try it again in another 20 years (that is how long it has been since I tried to make fruitcake the last time!!!!)

BTW it tastes delicious!

I am so excited – one of my quilts that I donated to the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative is up for sale today!

We’ve added incredible quilts to our Quilts For Sale Page: http://www.alzquilts.org/quiltsforsale.htmlAll kinds of quilts: Hummingbirds, hearts, flowers, trees, lighthouse, landscapes, abstract, and embroidered Christmas quilts. Hang them in your home, in your office or give them to someone special or instead of a Christmas card, birthday card, etc. And Yep–there’s still time to get them before Christmas.

SOLD Quilts #6040, #6432, #6561, #6929. Thanks so much!

http://www.alzquilts.org/quiltsforsale.html

If you click on the link above – quilts for sale – you will see it.  It isn’t up for auction, but you can buy it now for $75.00.  I bought the little yo yos at a “garage sale” from the daughter of a woman who was selling her mom’s stash after her death.  I just had to buy the pickle jar of yo yos so that her work would live on.  Sherry Whitford gave me the little cat button under the tree and painted the red fabric – so this quilt had MULTIPLE HANDS in it.  I actually wanted to KEEP IT – it has special meaning to me since we lost our cats, Christmas tree and house in a house fire in 2006 – but I decided that the Alzheimer’s cause was SO IMPORTANT….so here it is for sale!

PURRFECT PEACE

I am excited because all of the money from these donated quilts goes to Alzheimer’s Research….it is the most horrible of diseases and I hope it has not touched your family!

November UFO #3 Twice as Nice – an Eleanor Burns Design

Posted By on December 1, 2011

It is that time again – the day to post our November UFO FINISH.  Judy Laquidara of Patchworktimes.Com picked #3 on our UFO list for us to complete for November – and I did it!  Here it is – my TWICE AS NICE QUILT.

Twice As Nice

This Eleanor Burns Pattern is interesting – three quilts from ONE JELLY ROLL!  I have had this pattern for a couple of years – and I have had the jelly roll for that long too.  THE UFO LIST MOTIVATED ME TO GET THEM FINISHED!

The three quilts are made from one jelly roll; however I added borders, binding, backs, and some background setting pieces and sashes here and there too!

Do you want to see the other two?  I thought I heard a YES or TWO – so here you go!  🙂

Here is the first one – Judy of NC named it HAPPY SPOOLS and I think it is a great name!

What’s on My Design Floor Monday, November 28, 2011

We are on Step 2 on our Orca Bay Quiltville Mystery Quilt designed by Bonnie Hunter.  This step involves paper piecing 3 1/2″ squares.  These are just the cutest pieces EVER and they are made with SCRAPS and STRIPS of fabric from 3/4″ wide to 1 1/2″ wide.  Making these barely makes a DENT in my scrap bag stash.  We need 72 and I am making two Orca Bay Quilts!  Here is a sample of my Orca Bay 1 and Orca Bay 2 Step 2 blocks!

Orca Bay 1 - Shades of Gold

Since this is a mystery quilt, I have no idea how these blocks will be used in the quilt….but I doubt that they will be sewn together like I have them pictured!

Orca Bay 2 - Shades of Green

Here are my finished Orca Bay 1 Step One Quarter-Square Triangles – 224 of them!

Orca Bay 1 - Step 1

If you want to see what is on the Design Wall of quilters across the country go to Judy Laquidara’s Blog at PatchworkTimes. com

Here is the link…..Judy has a design floor, instead of a DESIGN WALL today too…..love her new quilt!
