What’s on my DESIGN FLOOR, Monday, January 9, 2012

Posted By on January 9, 2012

My DESIGN FLOOR is really getting fun (AND FULL)……I am working on putting together my second ORCA BAY 1 quilt.  It is red, white, blue and gold…stay tuned…..

The top of my first ORCA BAY II Quilt is finished…..and I have already delivered it to my long arm quilter….I can’t wait to see it finished!

Orca Bay II is with the long arm quilter

The part that is really fun about BOTH of these Orca Bay Quilts is that I did not buy any new fabric for this – it is all fabric that I had in my stash….that makes me feel really good.

I am also working on the 2012 COLOR CHALLENGE – a Vicki Welsh and Judy Laquidara project.  The photo that inspired the colors is from a photograph taken at the  Victoria and Albert Museum in London – an 1882 Ship Tile…  Here are my fabrics.  I am making an Alzheimer’s Art Initiative Quilt to donate……

Choice 2 Color Challenge 2012 January

I don’t know which fabrics that I will choose – but it will be a choice that I will make this week.  ONE MORE THING…..I have decided that all of my COLOR CHALLENGE PROJECTS must come from fabrics in my stash.  I really want to use what I already have!

And the newest and latest thing on my  DESIGN FLOOR this week is my NEW applique quilt from DON’T LOOK NOW…..RAINBOW LOLLIPOPS…  I think this is a very cute quilt; however I will not include the butterflies (because I have an inherent dislike for bugs with wings) and instead I will include cats!  I love cats!  I did buy the white background  fabric and one piece of green fabric for this quilt – because I needed lots for GRASS and green is my least favorite color – so I didn’t have a lot in my stash to choose from.

So far I have drawn FIVE PAGES of flowers and lollipops on the fusible web!  I used the lead from 4 pencils and all of the ink from 2 ink pens…..lol….that is a lot of drawing…..about 4 hours worth to be exact!  I am a member of an Applique Bee – a subset group from my Richmond Modern Quilt Guild  – and we are all making DON’T LOOK NOW applique patterns.  It is more fun to do this with friends…… because it is so tedious that if one were alone – one might do ANYTHING ELSE instead……LOL.

Cheddar Bow Tie LINKY Monday, January 9th, 2012

Posted By on January 9, 2012

Way back in 2011, Bonnie Hunter spotted an antique BOW TIE QUILT in an antique store.  This started the idea of having a BOW TIE CHEDDAR CHALLENGE…..and today is the first LINKY to what we are doing.

Here is my  CHEDDAR BOW TIE progress….

Mine is being made with my Mother and Daddy’s shirts.  I just realized that I came back from Kansas City in December without one of Daddy’s shirts!  Talk about taking the shirt off someone’s back!  But hey, he has beautiful shirts and almost EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM IS A PLAID!

If you want to see what other quilters are doing with the BOW TIE CHALLENGE go to Bonnie Hunter’s LINKY THING.  AND…ta da……if you can GUESS how many bow tie blocks that Bonnie has made,  you will win a prize!

Applique Bee – A Richmond Modern Quilt Guild Event

Posted By on January 8, 2012

Today was the beginning of a six-month applique bee at Susan Emory’s house.  We are meeting once a month to work on our DON’T LOOK NOW applique patterns.

Here are the beginnings of our six projects!

This one is Debbie’s future pillow!

This is Ann’s Quilt

Cheryl is also making a quilt….

Catherine’s LITTLE MONSTER QUILT will actually be a LITTLE SCOTTY QUILT…..

This is mine – sao’s RAINBOW LOLLIPOPS Quilt…..

….and by our QUEEN BEE, Susan, we have a tree pillow……

AND…..after only a few short hours – look what our Queen Bee has made!  I just LOVE the colors!

Debbie’s pillow top in progress  is beautiful!  Her applique is on white linen.  ELEGANT!

We really had fun today – we helped each other – we ate – we admired the furry guests

This isn't a FURRY GUEST - but have you ever seen a 7 year old GOLDFISH?????

All in all, we had a rip roaring time…….and speaking of RIP…..someone (who shall remain nameless) caught her pants on a buffet knob and ripped her pants.  I am really too “ELEGANT” to stoop so low as to take a picture – but somehow it got on my camera……

oops - guess we will have to applique a butterfly near that pocket!

The food was great……

The company was fabulous.....

And……I got the most WONDERFUL UNEXPECTED SURPRISE……Susan gave me a treadle sewing machine.  I am just absolutely in shock and ever so happy!  I named her Eleanor (after my grandmother……I still remember sewing on her treadle sewing machine – good memories!)  Do any of my quilter friends name their sewing machines?

My new Treadle Sewing Machine named ELEANOR

Thank you, Susan, for the Applique Bee, the lunch, and my new PRIZED POSSESSION, Eleanor!

FREE MOTION QUILTING – January 2012 – Heart Leaves

Posted By on January 8, 2012

Many of you are participating in the 2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge!  (See my  button on the side…!)

Frances Moore is our FMQ teacher for January…..check out the testimonial below from SewCalGal.

Frances Moore
blog: http://frantastic-stitchwitchery.blogspot.com/

Frances has been teaching quilting for 8+ years.  I met her during my FMQ research, in 2011, when I attended a FMQ Workshop with Two Wacky Woman.  I found Frances to be an excellent teacher, a wonderful person, and be blessed with a nice senses of humor too!  I enjoyed her class and was delighted when she agreed to be one of the 12 FMQ experts for this challenge.  What sets her apart from other FMQ teachers is her “No frame, stitch regulator, marking or gloves” approach.

Since learning to do my own Free Motion Quilting is one of my goals for 2012 I have been practicing and practicing and practicing my heart leaves.  You can sure tell that I am a beginner….but hey, everyone has to start somewhere!  Some of my leaves are pretty wonky – but I guess that is true with leaves in nature too.

Heart Leaves

Heart Leaves Continued

OK – the SECRET is to make the picture SMALLER – sigh……

My Brother Duetta – the quilting sewing machine – kicked the bucket – so until I get get it repaired, I won’t be doing any more leaves for awhile…..but I met my January challenge and I am FEELING GOOD!

Does anyone know – can you do this on a SingerFeatherweight?  I wouldn’t know how to drop the feed dogs!

What is on my DESIGN FLOOR, Monday, January 2, 2012

Posted By on January 2, 2012

It looks like I am starting the New Year with a FULL DESIGN FLOOR.  My creative FLOW is in high gear and I am really having fun!

First – OUR QUEEN OF MYSTERIES – Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville – revealed the plan for ORCA BAY.  WOW….it is stunning and looks like STAINED GLASS.  I wonder how many pieces are in this quilt?

Since I am making two of this mystery (and I creatively named them Orca Bay 1 and Orca Bay 2….LOL) I had to choose which one to put together first….I chose Orca Bay 2…..

So…….I gathered my PIECES and got ready!

The Flying Geese blocks for Orca Bay 2

The Border Blocks for Orca Bay 2

Here is the first section…..being examined by Tonto Morris (the cat!)  Remember I said that my second one would be a Christmas Quilt?  That is why I used greens for my little string pieced squares!

Orca Bay 2

This is what it will look like when I am finished (this one is Bonnie Hunter’s Quilt – my Orca Bay 1 should look similar because I am using the same colors as Bonnie’s!)

Bonnie Hunter's ORCA BAY

Also on my design floor is the NYE 2o11 Ann Smith Mystery (Fabricaholics Anonymous.)  I haven’t made a mystery quilt with 30’s fabrics yet – so this is the one!  It is all cut and ready – this one will go on retreat to the beach with me in February!

NYE 2011 Mystery

AND THAT IS NOT ALL…..I am doing the 2012 Color Challenge (anyone else doing this with Judy Laquidara at Patchworktimes.com?) and so I have been pulling fabric for that!  I don’t know YET what I am doing with the fabric – but I have found some in my stash that seems to fit!

January 2012 Color Challenge

I just might accomplish three goals at once here……

if I USE THE COLORS IN THE COLOR CHALLENGE ….

and do the 2012 FREE MOTION QUILTING CHALLENGE FOR JANUARY (which is to quilt with heart-shaped leaves)….

…..then I could donate it as an Alzheimer’s Art Quilt…..three goals in one.  YES THAT SOUNDS LIKE A PLAN TO ME!

To see what other quilters around the country have on their Design Walls – go to Judy Laquidara’s website….
