What is on my Design Floor, Monday, February 27, 2012

I only have a few more days to complete my February 2012 Color Challenge.  This month our colors were inspired by a photograph of figs provided by Vicki Welsh.

The Feb 2012 Color Challenge - FIGS

I used these colors to make a quilt for the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative….and I have it ready to be appliqued and bound….so that is on my design wall for this week!  I have named my quilt “Angels Watching Over Me.”

Angels Watching Over Me

I also need to make backs for my Curved Log Cabin Quilt and my Orca Bay 1 Quilt.  That should keep me busy this week!

Check out Judy Laquidara’s blog at Patchworktimes. com to see what other quilters are doing this week!

Mid Atlantic Quilt Festival February 2012

Posted By on February 26, 2012

Thursday I went to the Mid Atlantic Quilt Festival with the Hospitality Quilters Quilt Guild.  It is so nice to RIDE up to Hampton on the bus with friends……..spend the day looking at all of the beautiful quilts and then just sit and enjoy the ride home.

I don’t know if it was just me or what – but I REALLY REALLY thought this year’s show was great.  I enjoyed seeing the Colonial Piecemaker’s Challenge Quilts and was especially MOVED by the Alzheimer Quilt Exhibit.  Oh my, it is so emotional to look at all of the names of lives who have been claimed by this terrible disease. Once again I have to say I really appreciate Ami Simms for making the AAQI happen.  I also appreciate all of the quilters who are donating and buying these art quilts.  WE NEED TO FIND A CURE and all of the money from the sale of these quilts goes directly to research projects.

The vendors were great this year too.  I came home with a few beautiful buttons and some other necessities of life – like a DARNING FOOT for my Singer Featherweight and some new thimbles so I can TRY to avoid making holes in my fingers when I do hand quilting.  Special thanks to my buddy Catherine for helping me find these things that I could not live without.  🙂

Enjoy the pictures!!

The Corolla Ocean as seen from Tern of the Century and BARON – at Quilt Camp 2012

I simply adore Baron – one of Christy’s Great Danes.  This guy was our mascot and he has the most admirable manners.  He just melted my heart when he walked into the room carrying his TOY in his mouth.  This BIG BABY even came up and put his head in my lap.  I LOVE THIS DOG!  I HAD to take several pictures!

I also HAD to snap a few pictures of the ocean.  We did see a lot of dolphins this year but my camera isn’t good enough to have captured these…..maybe it is the person BEHIND the camera that is lacking in ability – but nonetheless, I loved being at the beach – and I even enjoyed the surf when it got a bit angry.  Actually the last night of quilt camp was a TINY BIT eventful to the max (just a tad bit when the windows were shaking! )  We had an angry sea – and rain water was blowing like crazy – but it was beautiful in all of its fury.  The truth is that with the storm at sea and the SNOW in surrounding areas, we were thinking that QUILT CAMP might have been extended by a day or so!

This is my last post of Quilt Camp 2012 at The Tern of the Century.  I hope you have enjoyed the posts!  I sure enjoyed being at QUILT CAMP.  Thanks again to Christy for welcoming us into her home – and thanks to Judy for all of the hard work that goes into organizing our fun – not to mention the effort that goes into sharing all of the wonderful recipes from our menus with us!

The EASY STRATA STAR and Quilts for Kids – Quilt Camp 2012

Posted By on February 21, 2012

Some of us chose to engage in a project or two at Tern of the Century Quilt Camp this year.

We are indebted to Jackie and Barbara for teaching us how to make the Easy Strata Star.  They had such admirable patience during our lesson – have you ever tried to teach a BUNCH OF TEACHERS?  It wasn’t easy!  You might even notice that ONE QUILTER/TEACHER has tape on her mouth.  LOL.

We started by sewing strata of either 7 or 8  1 1/2″ strips of fabric together……I took pictures of some of our fabric strata before they were cut into the pieces to make the strata stars.  I think that our stars turned out great and we had so much fun seeing how the little table top quilts looked made with different fabrics.

You can order the pattern here….if you make it, be sure that your strips are measured, cut and sewn accurately in order for the pieces to fit together in the end!

Thanks to Judy for arranging for us to make some Charity Downey Quilts for Kids too.  Most of us made them using the pillow-slip method with no binding.  (That part I loved and I learned to use spray adhesive as well – thanks Judy.)   I even did FREE MOTION QUILTING on my Featherweight.  (I am not pretending that I did a good job – but maybe after washing and shrinking a bit the crinkling will cover up my inexperienced FMQ – and thanks to AUNT DERANGED for telling me HOW to do FMQ on a Featherweight!)

Enjoy the pictures!

The EATING Part of Quilt Camp 2012

Posted By on February 21, 2012

I personally always enjoy the meals and the table decorations at Quilt Camp are fun too!  THANKS EVERYONE!

It is really delightful to see the CULINARY CREATIVITY that goes hand in hand with the sewing creativity (one of us – ME – didn’t get the culinary part – but I enjoy what others do!  Thank goodness, my cooking partner, Karen, is a great cook!)

We were all blown away by the BEACH CHICK meal and decor!  Aren’t the little red beach chairs ever so cute!  Those CHICKIE APRONS – and SOCKS are out of sight!!!!  🙂

I hope you enjoy our MEAL TIME PICTURES!    I must tell you that the PICNIC ANTS were PLASTIC – but ever so realistic!  If you are wondering about all of the RED PLASTIC BASKET PICTURES, I will explain!  We had to think of a creative use for the basket that we got to keep!  (As you can see, some of us were QUITE CREATIVE!)

The last picture is of a cute little fabric bag for candy that Christy taught us to make.  Every meal or two, we got another clue as to what to do (and we all started out with one UGLY fat quarter – but we soon discovered that ONE PERSON’S UGLY was ANOTHER PERSON’S COOL!) Christy  made the cute little bag pictured…..and she did NOT use ugly fabric.

AND….just for the record.  If you were at QUILT CAMP and you don’t see your picture, it is because you TURNED OUT BLURRY!  *sorry
