Rainbow Lollipops – that is what is on my DESIGN FLOOR this week.  I in an APPLIQUE BEE – a small group branched from the Richmond Modern Quilt Guild…….and somehow life has interfered with my last two group sewing times.  So I have declared this my MAKE UP WEEK!

Here is the pattern.....

Here are some of my flowers.....

I am using ME AND MY SISTER for Moda fabric – I had a FQ stack that I have had for YEARS and decided it would be a good choice….so onward I journey.  I am still fusing fabric at this point……it is a long journey.  I hope I like this RAINBOW LOLLIPOPS QUILT when I finish it……..it sure is a lot of work.  I am SURE that I won’t keep it…..it will be for a future gift….maybe some grandangel will see it and get attached!!!  LOL

I think that Jannae’s Art Quilt should be OFF the binding chair too.  It was on my DESIGN FLOOR recently but didn’t get finished…..wonder why!!!!  This will get finished ….. really, it will!

Jannae's Art Quilt needs to be bound

And I just HAVE TO WISH MY GRANDANGEL, Leanna, Happy Birthday today – she is 16 years old!  She is, in my opinion, a PERFECT GRANDANGEL and I LOVE HER!

Measuring Leanna when she was 15!

When she gets home from school today I will measure her AGAIN on my bedroom door to see how much she has grown this year!!  HAPPY BIRTHDAY LEANNA!

Sunset Over the Sea – sao’s Alzheimer’s/Color Challenge/Free Motion Quilting Challenge for April 2012

Sarah 2012

When my 12 year old Grandangel, Sarah, (pictured above)  saw my Vicki Welsh Color Challenge for April (a picture of Judy Laquidara’s Moldy Pie) she said, “Grandma, those colors make me think of a sunset over the ocean.”   WOW – I could really SEE THIS!  I love it when inspiration springs forth like this!  🙂

Vicki Welsh Color Challenge April 2012

So I went searching in my stash – and Catherine let me search in her stash – and I created “SUNSET OVER THE SEA.”  This will be my Alzheimer’s Art Quilt donation for April.

Sunset over the Sea

Great colors!!!

And the back of my quilt each month is the Sew Cal Gal’s  FREE MOTION QUILTING CHALLENGE – this month it was a Don Linn Stencil of a flower.  I learned to make a stencil – using tulle…..  This was the first time that I had used the blue erasable marking pen and the blue washed right out of the fabric!   I really loved learning how to do this.  Thanks for the tulle, Catherine *even though I told her I needed toile!  OH MY!

Tracing using tulle and an embroidery hoop

And VOILA – here is my flower……I am so happy with it, even though I am a total novice!  I just may have to put flowers on EVERYTHING.  LOL

SEW SEW DAYS April 10 and 11, 2012

SEW SEW DAYS APRIL 10 – 11, 2012

Catherine and I had a couple of SEW SEW DAYS at my house over spring break.  We did SEW many different things – some more INTERESTING than others.  But we did have fun – so much fun that we thought we had reached 2013 already!  Yes, I HAVE TO MENTION THIS because all of us can RELATE…..ALL OF US.  Catherine signed her board 2013!

Catherine DATED and SIGNED the Fabric Board she made for SWIRLY GIRLS

Ruby *the dog loves Catherine so much that she had to SLEEP with her head resting on Catherine’s foot!

I worked on my Scrappy Flower Garden Quilt…..yes, and I KNOW that I need a haircut!

Seven flowers made so far!

SEW CAL GAL’S FREE MOTION QUILTING CHALLENGE – APRIL 2012 – DON LINN

I also worked on my DON LINN Stencil project – made with toile…..or is it TULLE?  Oh my,  Catherine and I had such a communication issue as I was explaining to her that I needed  TOILE to make a quilting stencil…..LOL.  OK – so we make a good pair – don’t you think?    One of us can’t talk and the other is in another time zone!  Here is my Don Linn Stencil…….after using the BLACK PERMANENT MARKER…..see below!

And here it is marked with a BLUE ERASABLE PEN on my fabric – ready to be quilted…..wish me luck!

VICKI WELSH AND JUDY LAQUIDARA’S COLOR CHALLENGE – MOLDY PIE APRIL 2012

The TOP of this ALZHEIMER’S ART QUILT will be named “SUNSET OVER THE SEA” and this design was inspired by my 12 year old Grandangel, Sarah, who said the Colors in the MOLDY PIE COLOR CHALLENGE FOR APRIL reminded her of a sunset over the ocean……you never know where inspiration will turn up!

This is really a joint CHALLENGE FOR SURE…..the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative will receive the donation quilt and is my inspiration for the other 2012 challenges that I am doing;   the COLOR CHALLENGE for 2012 (Vicki Welsh and Judy Laquidara) and Sew Cal Gal’s 2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge.  Add to this the fabric collections from Catherine and me – and Sarah’s idea……well, you can’t get more collaborative than this!  🙂

Playing with the colors.....Catherine was my cutting and arrangement coach!

 Catherine’s PROJECT FOR SWIRLY GIRLS

Catherine worked hard on the FABRIC BOARD for SWIRLY GIRLS.  I can’t show you the finished product until after the SWIRLY GIRLS OPEN HOUSE on April 27  – but stay tuned – it is FANTASTICAL and SUPER FABULOUS!

Creativity at its finest!

 THE GREAT PINTEREST T-SHIRT PROJECT

AND THEN CAME THE PINTEREST INSPIRATION…….you write on a t-shirt with blue gel glue  (SOMETHING INSPIRATIONAL – I wrote “Smile and the World Smiles With YOU…” because that is what my daddy always said to me when he woke me up in the mornings!)  We couldn’t find the BLUE GEL GLUE so we used CLEAR GEL GLUE – which might have been a bad idea (like substituting baking powder and baking soda in a cookie recipe?

We washed and dried our t-shirts – preparing for the great creative project!

Wash your t-shirts first....

Use GOOD REINFORCERS under the t-shirt so you can write easily with the glue

Write your inspirational saying on your t-shirt

This part is where you hold your breath while you write with the glue...

Then you cut up another t-shirt so that you can make jewelry out of it!  SEE HOW MUCH FUN THIS IS?

Catherine did an impression of ELEANOR BURNS and tossed her trash on the floor….REALLY!  I AM NOT KIDDING!!!

Put it all into a cold water bath of black dye and leave it overnight

We decided to leave it soaking in the cold water dye so that it would be REALLY BLACK!!!

OK – so this is where I think we went wrong……PERHAPS WE SHOULD HAVE READ THE DIRECTIONS ON THE GLUE because it clearly says to get the GLUE OUT SOAK IT IN COLD WATER FOR 10 minutes – then wash.  Apparently the glue soaked out – along with our poetic writings…..

The BAD NEWS is that these shirts aren’t black nor are they CHATTY…..

The GOOD NEWS is that we have BEAUTIFUL PURPLE (LAVENDAR) shirts and potential jewelry to match.  These colors never photograph well – and I wish that I could HONESTLY say that they look better in person……..:):)

OOPS

FINISHED.........

You will notice that we EVEN DYED LACE TO SEW UNTO THE BOTTOM OF OUR SHIRTS!  🙂  I am still going to do this and it just MIGHT be my new favorite shirt!  It has such a plethora of memories…….

You laugh a little, you live and learn…..and sometimes SERENDIPITY GIVES YOU A GIFT THAT YOU WERE NOT EXPECTING!  🙂  The fun we had creating this UNUSUAL PROJECT was “PRICELESS.”  And toile is NOT tulle….and it really is still 2012!

What’s on My Design Floor, Monday, April 9, 2012

Somehow I have managed to get my Carolina Crossroads II top together…..instead of a 5 x 5 arrangement  – I have expanded it to 6 x 7.  I love this quilt and it just MIGHT be my FAVORITE Bonnie Hunter quilt. It was her first Mystery Quilt and when I made the first one, I gave it away.  THIS ONE I AM GOING TO KEEP!  And…this week I am going to add borders.    Here it is draped over my card table!  I am going to put a 2″ beige border on, followed by a 2 1/2″ dark blue border and a 4 1/2″ barn red border.  There is something about these 1  1/2″ tiny squares that absolutely fascinates me!  I just wish that I could explain why I love these quilts with little tiny pieces so much!

I actually contemplated putting on a border of 1 1/2″ squares but I wasn’t sure how it would look since in the body of the quilt, the squares are offset so as to look like diamonds and the border squares would have looked like squares – so I talked myself out of that one!

In this quilt there are lots of fabrics from my first quilt that I made in 2007……I bought a LOT extra!  LOL

I wonder what they thought at the quilt shop when I bought SO MUCH fabric for one quilt!  🙂

Also on my Design Floor is my 2012 Color Challenge for April.  The inspiration photo is of moldy pie……RIGHT……moldy pie.  Vicki Welsh, the fiber artist who is putting out this challenge saw something beautiful in the colors that OCCURRED on her forgotten pie!

Moldy Pie Color Challenge April 2012

My friend Catherine is going to share some of her teal fabric with me – but this is what I have pulled from my stash so far.  This is going to be my April Alzheimer’s Art Quilt when I have decided what to make!

Auditioning Fabrics

And the 2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge this month is a REAL CHALLENGE.  We are to make a stencil using TOILLE….which reminds me that I don’t have any!  This is on my Design Floor this week!
