On the Needles – August 17, 2012

I am happy to say that I have finished my Stephen West MYSTERY SHAWL – my first  Knit-A-Long and I have Judy Laquidara to thank for inspiring me to join.  I really learned so many things….and actually I didn’t even realize that there were so many things about knitting that I DID NOT KNOW!  LOL.  It is called ROCKEFELLER – Rockefeller Center is the inspiration for the pattern.

Here it is….TA DA…..

Sew Sew Paint Days August 2012

Posted By on August 11, 2012

Catherine and I had three REMARKABLE Sew Sew Days – as I usually call them.  Although NOT a lot of sewing was happening this time so I have called this our SEW SEW PAINT DAYS.

I have mentioned before that when Catherine and I went to THE EMPTY NEST in Warrenton, VA a few weeks ago,  I got some Annie Sloan Chalk Paint – and I have been SO LOOKING FORWARD to trying my hand at this wonder paint!  I had to wait for my CREATIVE COACH, Catherine,  and boy was I glad that I waited!  She told me exactly what to do because she had taken the class taught by Janet – who owns The Empty Nest.     As would be expected, Catherine had GREAT IDEAS and a few days of fun have turned into a bit of a HOME RENOVATION PROJECT!

For days I have been trying to decide what to paint.  I took pictures of possibilities….  would it be a rocking chair, double crate THINGIE, bookcase, or antique milk can?   I took pictures of several things but my LIST of POSSIBILITIES kept growing instead of narrowing down into THE CHOICE!  I kind of wanted to restore the poor milk can that REALLY needed some help.  Here are pictures of the FOUR TOP POSSIBILITIES.

Antique Flea Market Rocking Chair from California

Double Crate THINGIE from Goodwill

Not so beautiful bookcase from the Midlothian Antique Mall

The antique milk can from CA that survived the house fire.

Since the milk can needed some prior treatment before painting – I decided to start with the rocking chair – I could just SEE my beautiful new RED ROCKING CHAIR in my mind’s eye!

BUT…..the creative Catherine had a brilliant idea.  Why not paint JUST THE SEAT and THE TOP of the rocking chair with GRAPHITE and then use SOFT WAX to let the wood shine through.  WOW….good idea!  To quote Catherine……”ANYONE could just paint the entire chair red!”  That ANYONE could have been ME if it had not been for Catherine’s creative touch.

Here we go…..chair is on the patio table on the porch – ready to be transformed!

Catherine is giving advice and encouragement

I had on a shirt splashed with red color – because I thought if I GOT RED PAINT ON ME it would never show.  Well, the graphite didn’t show on my shirt either!  🙂

Tape is on and I am ready to go!

I like the graphite!

It looks like a new OLD chair!

I love it!

It feels nice!

Catherine is busy creating SURPRISE works of art

Catherine did some sewing on our SEW SEW Days….a table runner

Catherine put in piping for the first time ever and it turned out PERFECT!

First Time Piping…….

Well, I am having so much fun and am so encouraged by how the rocking chair turned out that I decided to go ahead and transform my Goodwill double crate THINGIE – because I had to use my RED Emporer’s Silk Chalk Paint!

Love this red!

The Dark Wax gives it a deep burgundy look!

Well, let me tell you, that using CHALK PAINT is like eating a potato chip – you can’t eat just one.  SO NOW I have the bright idea to do a ROOM MAKEOVER……. my DD and DSIL will be home from a vacation tomorrow – and why not surprise them with something really cool!  SO……Catherine and I launched upon EXTREME ROOM MAKEOVER PLANS.  The bookcase was the next thing to become red.

This is what we did on DAY TWO of our SEW SEW PAINT DAYS!

Here it is STILL NOT SO BEAUTIFUL (Oreo the Cat thinks it is cool to have the books out – so she has her own little BUNK BED on the bottom shelf!)

Oreo moved out to the porch – still loving HER NEW HOME.

TA DA – Emporer’s Silk has done its trick!

Catherine – again – was the only one doing some sewing!  She presented me with my CHALLENGE PIECE – for our Richmond Modern Quilt Guild Challenge.  We each had to pick a WORD that represented who we were or wanted to be.  My word was SPANGLE….and here is my beautiful SPANGLE PIECE!

Beautiful and Creative

Catherine tried to hide – but I managed to get her in the picture.

Thanks Catherine – You outdid yourself!

On the SECOND DAY – I decided to  paint the MILK CAN.  Since it had been scorched badly in the fire, Catherine suggested that I spray paint it black so I could start with an EVEN SURFACE.  So after a quick trip to Lowes  to get black paint (it might have been Home Depot because I get them confused and never can decide which one I went to)  here is what the milk can transformed into.

Now it is black…..

After only one coat of the amazing Emporer’s Silk Chalk Paint

After application of the DARK WAX

I actually woke up a bit stiff this morning after two days of painting and buffing….but a long hot shower had me ready for the THIRD SEW SEW PAINT DAY.  This was the HOME IMPROVEMENT MAKEOVER DAY.    First came the STAGING of the bookcase.

The Dark Wax has given it a wonderful deep rich red look.

Did you catch that – Catherine STAGED IT – see this is the difference between Catherine *the artist*  and MOI……the regular person.  I would have put books back onto the bookcase.  CATHERINE STAGED IT and turned it into A WORK OF ART!

wow

The milk can is in its place…..

Transformed Milk Can

The Double Crate THINGIE is holding home gym equipment….

I have a new KNITTING CENTER – and LOVE sitting in my “NEW” rocking chair!

And while we were on a roll – we rehung a few pictures……and stars……and Catherine framed a photograph of Grandangel Leanna that Leanna’s  friend took for a high school art project…..

Grandangel Sarah painted this cat in art class – in Kindergarten….I loved it and had to frame it.  It became the INSPIRATION for a cat quilt that I made for her.

Sarah’s Cat Quilt

The picture of Grandangel Leanna sitting on a swing is her friend’s photographic art project.  I loved the close up of Leanna’s face with the chain links of the swing casting a shadow on her face.

Catherine and Ruby are VEGGING OUT after THREE DAYS OF HOME IMPROVEMENT fun!

By the way – the Double Crate Thingie, the bookcase and the milk can were all painted from ONE One-Quart CAN of Emporer’s Silk Chalk Paint and I still have some left!  Let’s see – is there anything else that NEEDS to be painted RED!  LOL.  Did I mention that Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is now on my LIST OF FAVORITE THINGS.

I can’t wait for my family to return from their vacation tomorrow to see what Catherine and I have done!  It is not EVERYONE who gets a HOME MAKEOVER while they are on vacation.  :):)  Catherine says if they never leave me HOME ALONE again, I will know why!

AND…..ta da…..before I say SO LONG and because it is FUN…..here are some before and after chalk paint pictures.

Judy Laquidara has reminded me that it is TIME to post what is on the needles (knitting, that is) this week.

I am knitting on the NEVER ENDING CLUE 4 of the Rockefeller Shaw – Stephen West’s Mystery Shawl.  It is taking forever – but I am enjoying sitting in my rocking chair watching the Olympics while I work on it!

My knitting Station

And here is what I have completed so far……1/2 of Clue 4……I still have to knit the OTHER SIDE!

Check out Judy’s blog to see what is ON THE NEEDLES of other knitters this week!  And while you are there, give her a SHOUT OUT – she became a first time GRANDMOTHER this week – and that is pretty special!!!!  🙂

KNIT KNIT KNITTING AWAY

Posted By on August 7, 2012

The knitting needles have been click  click clicking away here lately.

I finished my third and final project for CAMP LOOPY EWE……..the Whipporwill Shawl.  I found some rubber interlocking puzzle blocks at Wal-Mart so that I could block it.  This was my first attempt at truly blocking a finished work.  I used lots of T-Pins to get the shawl just the right shape and size.   I love this design (by Carina Spencer.)

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/whippoorwill

I used Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light yarn in Nutmeg and Parchment………this was really fun to knit.

My Blocking Mat is pretty colorful!!!

SAO Wearing the WHIPPORWILL SHAWL

This was also my Ravellenics project and it had to be finished by the end of the Olympic Games on August 12.  So….I am happy to say that I met my goal.  TWO GOALS WITH ONE SHAWL!!  Camp Loopy and Ravellenics.

AND……I tested a pattern for Diane Louw……I believe that she is a designer from South Africa……..Jesse’s Hat.  The pattern is available at Ravellery…..

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/jesses-hat-knitted-top-down

I did it with Sock Yarn that I got in Warrenton, VA at the Red Thread Yarn Shop (to make a pair of socks – it looks like my sock knitting has been DELAYED once again!)

Here is Jesse’s Hat……

And now – back to my MYSTERY SHAWL KNIT A LONG – my Stephen West Rockefeller Shawl still needs CLUE 4……..stay tuned ……..  here it is with the first three clues completed!

Rockefeller – Stephen West Mystery Shawl – Clues 1, 2, and 3 Completed

Ravellenics and Camp Loopy Ewe Project 3

Posted By on July 29, 2012

During the Olympics I am supposed to be KNITTING – I am entered into the SHAWL EVENT for TEAM LOOPY 2012 – it is called the RAVELLENICS.

Here is my shawl for the SHAWL EVENT….WHIPPORWILL.   (It is also my Project 3 for Camp Loopy Ewe 2012.)  We were to CAST ON for RAVELLENICS  during the opening ceremonies of the Olympics.

Here are my Madelinetosh Skeins – I am using Tosh Merino Light in Nutmeg and Parchment……  I love this yarn – it knits like a dream.

The yarn is ready……

And here is my progress……from Friday night until Sunday afternoon.    OH MY –  will I finish this shawl and KNIT A PAIR OF SOCKS TOO BY AUGUST 12?  HMMMM

Well, I was at VA SCRAPPERS most of the day Saturday – and then once I did start to knit,  I had to start over three times *I might have been distracted by the Olympics Opening Ceremonies – I am going to use this excuse anyway.  But  TINKing takes time  (for you NONKNITTERS – to TINK is to KNIT backwards or RIPIT….also know among knitters as FROGGING. )  Sigh.  Sadly I know these terms by heart – even though I am still looking up more pleasant things like I-Cords, XAB and XBA, MIL, M1R, K1BTL,  K1FB, etc.  To show you what a BEGINNER I AM I had to look up MC and CC (which simply means main color and contrasting color!)  Maybe I need to find the book KNITTING FOR DUMMIES  – I am sure there is such a book in existence!  The online knitting groups help a lot because there are so many NICE KNITTERS willing to EXPLAIN things!

The Whipporwill – after three days

There are a couple of  things that are making me happy no matter HOW FAR ALONG I AM  on my shawl.   One is my own little LOOPY EWE sheep tape measure.  Catherine got it for me at Lattitudes when we were in Warrenton on Friday.  I have named it LOOPY EWE.  After all, I am at CAMP LOOPY EWE right now and I am on TEAM LOOPY for the RAVELLENICS so the name was a no-brainer!

Sao’s LOOPY EWE

AND did you notice what my LOOPY EWE is standing on?  A MOST WONDERFUL ANTIQUE PICNIC BASKET with a “scotty” tray lid.  Catherine got it for me for an early BIRTHDAY PRESENT.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT.

Catherine bought it at THE EMPTY NEST from Annie Sloan.  I also love that it has a story – it belonged to Annie Sloan’s 93 year old Great Aunt.  That makes it SO SPECIAL!  It is on my favorite things list – both the basket and the little LOOPY EWE!

THANKS CATHERINE AND ANNIE SLOAN FOR SELLING IT TO CATHERINE!

And now I am thinking that I need to get back to my knitting – I don’t want to let TEAM LOOPY down…………oh – you are asking about my MYSTERY SHAWL KNIT ALONG….well, the third clue came out Friday – and I am not KNITTING ALONG – but I am thinking about it and as soon as I get these other things completed, I will think about it in a PRODUCTIVE WAY!

And then there is ANNIE SLOAN’S CHALK PAINT that keeps CALLING me to paint something RED………   Visions of what I admired at THE EMPTY NEST IN WARRENTON, VA keep dancing through my head…….that settles it, THE EMPTY NEST is going on my list of Favorite things too!
