What’s on my DESIGN FLOOR, October 29, 2012

Today will be a sewing day…………NO SCHOOL TODAY because of Hurricane Sandy.  We are prepared………FFCCOP……that is my pneumonic for turning the generator on…….

FILL  the gas tank carefully through the FILTER

if it is COLD flip on the CHOKE

Flip the ON switch

AND…ta da PULL the cord

Come to think of it maybe I should add an extra P on the end……PRAY!

While we still have electricity I am going to sew – we are in the midst of the CALM BEFORE THE STORM…….so we have BATTENED DOWN THE HATCHES.

Here is my progress on CATHERINE’S BASKETS.

I named it this because Catherine cut out the basket blocks!!!  YEAH!

Catherine’s Baskets

The little appliqued flower is made from outgrown jeans from my grandangels……speaking of which…..look who scared me in my sewing room!

Grandangels Cooper and Sarah

Sarah is a character from DR WHO….here she is wearing my Mother’s TRENCH COAT……her full costume.

Grandangel Leanna was in the SLAUGHTER HOUSE at BLOOD LAKE….spooky!

When the electricity goes off I will work on my SCRAPPY GRANDMOTHER’S GARDEN.

Scrappy Grandmother’s Garden

When my fingers get sore from sticking myself so many times (TRUST ME – this will happen) I am going to work on disassembling my mother and daddy’s shirts to put into quilts……….OH DEAR…..I guess I had better iron them RIGHT NOW while I still have electricity!

One thing that I know for sure, I will not be napping……my bed is taken!

Midnight, Cuddles and Hannah with RUBY – who thinks that she is a cat too!

My Blue Skies Socks are growing…….here they are from last week.

Oct 14 BLUE SKIES

And here they are now….not a lot of progress…..BUT it is better than nothing…….in fact looking at my sock knitting progress over the past 4 years, this is STELLAR!

Oct. 26 BLUE SKIES Socks

Sometimes after being in the classroom all day, my brain has slowed down and my fingers are ready to DO NOTHING…..LOL.  However, if Hurricane Sandy comes to Virginia as expected we may be without power – and since I have more CANDLES than Carter’s Little Liver Pills (and I have no idea what that is – it is just an expression that I have heard) I might make a lot of progress knitting these socks!

What’s on my Design Floor, Monday, October 22, 2012

Posted By on October 22, 2012

Good morning quilting friends.  This week – on my design floor – I have TWO QUILTS with the binding sewn on and ready to be hand stitched down.  Who wants to bet on whether or not I actually get this done?  Well, even if I don’t (and I PROBABLY won’t) they are ready for my upcoming retreat projects.

First, here is the red, white, and blue Fabricaholics Summer 2011 Mystery.

I was hoping this could be a donation quilt for the Quilts of Valor – but it turned out to be too small  (the fabric was from my stash and I ran out!!)

Summer 2011 Mystery

Second is my WORMS AND JELLY ROLL Quilt of America Mystery…..all ready to be finished.

This one will be donated to Hospice in honor of Jay Hoppers.  When someone in my family passes, I like to donate a quilt to a worthy cause – it seems more lasting than flowers to me.

Worms and JellyRolls

THEN…..I have my SOMETHING HALLOWEENY Quilt top completed…….I designed it myself – not much of a design – but here it is!  Grandangel Sarah said she didn’t think I was going to get this one finished in time for Halloween.  I think she is right!  Sarah is concerned that I get this one finished quickly because she has CALLED IT.   That is code for “THIS IS MINE AND KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF IF YOU ARE NOT ME.”  She really doesn’t care about the quilt top…..but she is love with the velvety feel of the orange MINKEE backing …..ala Susan *THANK YOU SUSAN!

By the way – how do you like my UNIQUE name for this quilt!  LOL.

Judy has announced the ON THE NEEDLES report day – so here goes.  After FOUR YEARS of struggles to try to knit  a pair of socks, I did it!    HOWEVER…..you do not have to look closely at all to notice that ONE OF THESE SOCKS is not like the other one.  SIGH…..when they are on my feet, it isn’t so noticeable!  :):)

My first pair of socks

However, for my SECOND PAIR OF SOCKS  (yes, I am knitting another pair!) I decided to knit them both at once to make sure they turned out the same.  SO FAR SO GOOD!  LOL

Blue Skies Socks

I named them BLUE SKIES.  What?  You mean other people do not name their socks?  Well, I guess I am just a NAMING kind of person.  My cars, my sewing machines….and my SOCKS have names!  My first pair, shown above, are named “Million Dollar Babies.”  Hey, it makes me smile, what can I say!  (In my defense, I only name the socks that I knit – not the ones that I buy at the store……LOL!)

OK – I am off for school now……..and did you know that I MAKE UP NAMES for the children too!  Nice ones……like Pinky Pie and Mr. Jeter.  They LOVE it.  When they see me, they ask TWO THINGS……first, “Do you have Mr. Clicker?” and second, “What’s my name!?”

Go to Judy Laquidara’s blog to see what other knitters have on their needles this week (and to see if anyone else is naming their socks!)

WILD AND CRAZY is on my DESIGN FLOOR, Monday, October 15, 2012

Posted By on October 15, 2012

If you know me – even a little bit – you know that in the quilting world I am influenced by, inspired by, delighted by, entertained by, and motivated by Bonnie K. Hunter of Quiltville.com*!    *One of my former professors told me one time  that my sentences tended to be BIGGER than A, T, and T ….    and maybe she had a point!

One of the things that Bonnie Hunter does that makes me smile is make unusual backs for her quilts!  The backs of Bonnie’s quilts simply make me smile and I can hardly make myself put a traditional “ALL ONE COLOR” back on my own quilts.     So that is what is on my design floor this week – A WILD AND CRAZY BACK for my Carolina Crossroads II  Quilt.  I used  2 1/2″ strips from leftover bits of binding fabric along with 28  yellow and green  HSTs leftover “GREEN BAY PACKER” blocks that I made and had no clue what to do with……now they have a home!   And, I am smiling for sure!  Maybe I am even laughing a little!

This quilt back is not only WILD AND CRAZY, but it is also HUGE!  When I spread it out on the floor, I POLITELY REQUESTED that family members refrain from stepping on it……LOL…..that was an INEFFECTIVE THING TO DO……almost immediately after my “VERY POLITE REQUEST”  I had human PEEPS and furry critters appearing out of the woodwork to lounge on, sit on, and WALK ON the quilt back!

This is before the CATS joined the peeps! LOL

I did manage to get a photo of the quilt back unadorned by INVADERS.  🙂

Wild and Crazy Quilt Back

AND……I do have a mini-design wall now – thanks to another favorite Bonnie friend *Bonnie Tucker……  Bonnie provided the supplies and the inspiration…..it is a fiberboard, covered with batting edged with binding.    It was fun to make and I didn’t get TOO MUCH hot glue on my fingers!
