Virginia Scrappers December 22, 2012

Posted By on December 22, 2012

As always, we had a great time today at our monthly Virginia Scrappers quilting fest.  We did lots of sewing, sharing, creating, eating, shopping and OODLES of giggling.  I think we all agreed that Catherine missed her calling when she didn’t go on stage doing stand-up comedy.  She kept us laughing for sure.  I have never seen anyone who could come up with something funny to say on the spur of the moment like that.

We had a mini-feast today with everyone bringing something fun to share………..YUM.  Thanks to everyone for making this a special time!

Here are some pictures of our fun today – and MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE….it won’t be long now….

NEWFO Challenge for 2013

Posted By on December 17, 2012

I have to say that I am still chuckling over the ingenious and FUN challenge just presented to us by CAT PATCHES.

Check it out here if you want to join in on the fun

Barbara claims that she hasn’t been quilting long enough to have UFO’s – WOW…..NO UNFINISHED OBJECTS – so she has designed a NEW Challenge – a wish list for quilts that we want to START in  2013. YES…..an INTENTIONAL LIST of what we want to start.

I am going to play – even though I do have some REAL UFOs!

Here is my wish list – but I haven’t assigned them to a particular month……..just 2013 sometime.  Here I go into the “ZONE OF PERMISSION.”

1.  Bonnie Hunter’s QUILTMAKER MYSTERY – starting in the March/April issue (I think)….with a new clue in each issue.

2.  5 1/2″ paper pieced Green String Blocks – because Bonnie Hunter is making these and I am SURE they will turn up in some quilt pattern!

3.  Scrappy Flying Geese – a free Christmas Gift pattern from Bonnie Hunter at Quiltville!

4.  FABRICAHOLICS Christmas MYSTERY 2012 (no photo because it is a mystery!)

5.  POCKETFULOFMYSTERIES New Year’s Eve MYSTERY 2012 (no photo because it is a mystery!)

6.  Bonnie Hunter’s Quiltville Mystery November, 2013 #1

7.  Bonnie Hunter’s Quiltville Mystery November, 2013 #2

8.  Quilter’s Club of America Mystery #8 – 2013

9.  FABRICAHOLICS MYSTERY Summer Mystery 2013 (no photo because it is a mystery!)

10.  POCKETFULOFMYSTERIES Christmas MYSTERY 2013 (no photo because it is a mystery!)

Well, from looking at my list, it is quilt clear that I can’t resist a Bonnie Hunter Quilt or a good mystery quilt!

I guess I have cheered myself up enough for now.  THANKS BARBARA….what a creative idea!

I was in Kansas City, MO celebrating my Daddy’s 91st birthday last week, so I was a little bit behind schedule on sewing on CLUE 3 for Bonnie Hunter’s Easy Street Mystery Quilt……but it was a real honor and lots of fun to be at Daddy’s birthday celebration for sure!

First…..here is my 91-year young birthday Daddy!  We had a good time at Crown Center enjoying the magic of the Christmas season.  (Also pictured is my brother, Fred.)  I will post more of my Kansas City trip soon because I took some pictures of some awesome antique quilts while celebrating Christmas on the Missouri River!

Here is what is on my DESIGN FLOOR!

While I was in Kansas City celebrating birthday and family time, I worked on my Scrappy Grandmother’s Flower Garden – I am making some good progress too.  All blocks with be scrappy with a final black row and then the connecting path will be butterscotch/gold.

When I got back home in Virginia,  I was able to complete Clue 3 of the Easy Street Mystery just hours before Clue 4 was posted.  How is that for perfect timing?  HERE ARE MY PICTURES.  My Easy Street I has Half Square Triangles that are PURPLE – but somehow purple never photographs well!  My purple and my aqua are constants in this quilt.  I usually do all scrappy but this time I didn’t have these colors readily available.

Here is my second one that I call Christmas Easy Street – Clue 3.  It is made with scrappy HOLLY JOLLY fabrics plus lots of scrappy aquas.

And Sunday I completed the Easy Street Mystery Clue 4.  They say that quilting is good therapy and I, for one, am a testimonial for that.  I have been so EXTREMELY saddened by the Conn. School Shooting that sewing was about all that I could do…….sometimes my vision was blurred with the tears, but  thankfully I didn’t cut myself or run over my fingers with the sewing machine!  My heart certainly is broken for the families who have lost loved ones.

What is on my Design Floor, Monday, December 3, 2012 and LINKY for EASY STREET CLUE 2

Posted By on December 3, 2012

On my Design Floor this week……….are flying geese EVERYWHERE.  I have now made enough FLYING GEESE for my Easy Street 1 and Christmas Easy Street II mysteries.

I am using purple in my quilt *just like Bonnie* but HER PURPLE is my AQUA…..and this is also my constant…….so every flying geese unit  is white with the same batik fabric.

Easy Street 1

I did the same thing for my Christmas Easy Street II – I substituted aqua (scrappy) for Bonnie’s purple.  I won’t have a constant in this quilt because I think I will be OK without it.  Most of the fabrics are from the same Holly Jolly Moda fabric line.

Christmas Easy Street II

Since I was using yardage, rather than pre-cut 2″ strips, I made my flying geese using the Eleanor Burns method (with the flying geese ruler.)  I like Bonnie’s method too and love the EASY ANGLE and COMPANION ANGLE RULERS.  In the past I have made my flying geese blocks using Bonnie’s method…..so both work good for me.  It is fun to have options.    AND….I have cut my 2 x 3 1/2″ pieces for the next clue.

Also on my Design Floor this week is Nanna’s Surprise (the Quilter’s Club of America Mystery.)  Here it is after Clues 1, 2, and 3.  I am using some of the same HOLLY JOLLY Moda fabric in this quilt as I am in the Christmas Easy Street II.  I bought a TON of this fabric several years ago when I was first learning to quilt (in 2007) and had NO CLUE how much fabric to buy for a quilt.  I really didn’t even understand what a STASH WAS – but this was one of the things I bought to BUILD ONE!  LOL.

Nanna’s Surprise Mystery after Clue 3 Dec/2012

Finally I am working on the Pocketful of Mysteries Dorothy Young Christmas Mystery 2012 (named the Dashing Bachelor)….and I need to do the cutting for this before the next clue comes out a few days before Christmas.  I am using 30’s fabrics…..greens, pinks, blues, and yellow on white as a background.

Christmas Mystery 2012 DASHING BACHELOR

I will be heading to Kansas City, Missouri this week to spend time with my daddy and the rest of my KC family – so also on my design floor in Kansas City and on the AIRPLANE will be my Scrappy Flower Garden quilt.

So it looks like I have 32 TOTAL BONNIE HUNTER QUILTVILLE QUILTS….5 are still in progress but the other 27 are finished!  I wonder how many Quiltville Quilts that my fellow quilter friends have made?

P.S.  My friend, Bonnie Tucker just reminded me that I FORGOT one of the Bonnie Hunter quilts that I have in progress…..my red and white TALKING TURKEY from Bonnie’s latest book – STRING FLING.  (So I have  a total of 33 with SIX of these Quiltville quilts still  in progress!  Yes, I am definitely an AVID BONNIE FAN!)   And….isn’t Bonnie Tucker AMAZING to remember this one and remind me that I had left it out.  I am not sure how that happened either, because I love this one and have been wanting a red and white quilt for forever since red is probably my favorite color!!!

PPSS (if there is such a thing….LOL)  A fellow Quiltville friend just told me that I have TWO #21 quilts.  I guess I got so excited about gathering all of my Quiltville Quilts together in one place that I forgot how to count!  THANKS GWENDOLYN……so that makes a total of 34 with 6 of these still in progress!

GWENDOLYN….I am blown away that you caught the counting error……did that just POP out at you or are you a math teacher and you notice things like that!?

I am also blown away that Bonnie Tucker noticed that I had omitted my Talkin Turkey quilt in progress.

WHAT FUN WE DO HAVE!
