Baron at Quilt Camp February 2013

Posted By on February 24, 2013

No retreat would be complete without Baron.  He is such a sweetie and you can tell by the pictures that he is well loved by the quilt campers!  Here are some of my favorite photos of Baron at Quilt Camp – at Tern of the Century, Corolla, NC!

When you are a big guy, you need a big bowl of water!  Baron is so polite – he was interested in our food, but he never made a serious attempt to sample anything!!!

Not mentioning any names (but her intials are AS!) but if you clown around and I have my camera in hand…….well, you just never know what might happen!

Getting it Done February 2013

Posted By on January 31, 2013

I am a bit embarrassed……sort of…..I only met HALF my January Getting it Done Goals!  I had four things on my list and I accomplished TWO! But I did a little MORE than I meant to on two of them….so maybe I am not embarrassed at all…..LOL

First……I said I was going to put my Scrappy String Flying Geese blocks together with sashings…..       Did I do that……NO.  I actually am stuck….I can’t decide if this is going to be a quilt with sashings…..or a really cool border….so this is now on hold.

Second I wanted to get my blocks finished for my Bonnie Hunter Easy Street Mystery Quilt.   YEAH ME….I not only got my blocks completed, but I got them sewn together with borders put on.    SO YES FOR MY NUMBER 2 GOAL!

Third, I wanted to complete my blocks for my second Easy Street Mystery Quilt my Christmas Easy Street.  OK…..I did get my blocks completed….AND SEWN TOGETHER WITH BORDERS……  smile.  YES FOR MY NUMBER 3 GOAL!

And Fourth, I wanted to make a few blocks for the NEW YEAR’S EVE MYSTERY….but I didn’t even start!  The fabric strips are still on my design board.  Goal #4 is a BIG NO!

OK – so moving right along…..it is time to DECIDE what will go on my GETTING IT DONE February list!

I am going to keep putting FOUR GOALS on my list each month!

First…..I want to get the binding completed on my CURVED LOG CABIN QUILT.

Second, I want to get the binding on my Carolina Crossroads II Quilt (a Bonnie Hunter Quiltville Mystery Quilt.)

Third – I NEED to get my Christmas 2011 Mystery top put together……designed by Dorothy Young.

Fourth – I will spend some time on my Scrappy Grandmother’s Flower Garden!

Knowing me, putting TWO QUILT BINDINGS on my goal list for one month – A SHORT MONTH TOO – might be unrealistic….but hey, I am going to go for it!  🙂

Check out what how other quilters did on their GETTING IT DONE January 2013 – and you will also get to see their GETTING IT DONE goals for February 2013.  Here is Judy Laquidara’s link.

HAPPY SEWING EVERYONE!

What is on my Design Floor Monday, January 28, 2013 …. and a few Grandangel Commercials…..LOL

Posted By on January 28, 2013

It is that time again – DESIGN WALL Monday.    I am still working on my Bonnie Hunter Quiltville Mystery – and I am calling this SECOND one CHRISTMAS EASY STREET because I am using MODA HOLLY JOLLY fabric.

Right now I am cutting 12 1/2″ squares for the back….I need 81 and then maybe a MILLION more piano keys along one side and then enough  for across the top……so that is going to take awhile because the back needs to measure 108″ x 108″!   BUT it is worth it because….I love love love scrappy backs.  I figure ANYONE can make a plain back…..scrappy ones are special  (I learned that from my friend Catherine…the ANYONE CAN DO THAT part.)

Don’t get me wrong, I actually don’t think there is anything wrong with an all one fabric back and I  do make some like this – it is just that Bonnie Hunter got me started on the SCRAPPY BACK idea and they just plain make me smile.  SO – anything that triggers that “PURPLE PASSION” button and makes us smile is a good thing – right?

Here is my PROGRESS REPORT from this week!  Here is my EASY STREET with two borders.  The inner one is purple and the outer border is lavender.

And for fun, I made a few blocks for the SCRAPPY AROUND THE WORLD Quilt….a Bonnie Hunter inspired project…..

TIME OUT FOR A GRANDANGEL COMMERCIAL…..

It was busy but fun week – we got to observe WATCH WEEK at Swift Creek Academy of the Performing Arts.  That means visitors can watch the class in session.  I got to see Grandangel Cooper turn a cartwheel….let me tell you, this was very exciting.  That is something that I never COULD DO…..and I secretly would still like to learn to do it!  How old does one have to be before it is too late to try to turn a cartwheel?  I can’t do it now because I have FROZEN SHOULDER (rotator cuff injury) but as soon as I am healed I just might try it.  I just don’t want to cause an injury to my sewing arm….LOL.

I can't believe she can do push ups.....I only did GIRL ONES .... wow!

I can’t believe she can do push ups…..I only did GIRL ONES …. wow!

The SNOW was a big EXCITING EVENT and cut into my quilting time last week……here is Grandangel Cooper enjoying the snow.  We had a 2 hour early release from school on Friday and the kids were so excited.  I was teaching 2nd grade and it was such a joyful experience to see how HAPPY those kids were about SNOW and GETTING OUT EARLY.    Earlier I had taught the children a SNOW DANCE and when it started to snow and  school was dismissed two hours early, one child said, “Mrs. Owens, your snow dance really works fast!!!!”    If only we could ALL retain that kind of excitement over the little things in life!

Grandangel Sarah is getting ready to WRITE IN THE SNOW with a SNOW MARKER….what will they think of next?

Have you ever heard of SNOW MARKERS?

Have you ever heard of SNOW MARKERS?

Grandangel Sarah had a great basketball game on Saturday too….she made half of her team’s points.  It was VERY EXCITING….that is her dribbling the ball.  These games are real nail biters!  Let me tell you, these girls are tough too.  They often end up on the floor “wrestling” for possesion of the ball!  🙂

OK – the Grandangel commercial is over and NOW  back to my DESIGN FLOOR….  I got the piano key border on my Christmas Easy Street (this is my second Easy Street Mystery quilt.)      I had a difficult time deciding what kind of border to put on….so I put on two 2 1/2″ borders (teal and red) and then added the piano keys.  I wasn’t as thrilled with my borders as I thought that I would be…..but I imagine I will love it when I see it quilted and completed.   Maybe it is just the fact that green is one of my least favorite colors???   And now I am working on the back….remember those 81 12 1/2″ squares that I said that I needed?   MAYBE I will finally deplete my MODA HOLLY JOLLY Stash.  I must have REALLY LIKED THAT FABRIC because I sure bought a lot of it several years ago!

How fast these weeks go by….I can hardly believe that January is MORE THAN 1/2 over and Obama is being inaugurated today (it seems like ONLY YESTERDAY that we were hearing debate speeches and preparing for Christmas!!!)

It is also Grandangel Jannae’s 9th birthday……..what a day to celebrate!

Jannae with the Art Quilt that Grandma Shirley made for her (she drew the pictures when she was 5 and 6 years old.)

Since we have had a SCHOOL VACATION ala SNOW DAY on Friday, I managed to get in a bit of sewing.  While I got a lot done, there are so many things to do……so little time, so many quilts….LOL

Here is what is on my DESIGN FLOOR for this week.

The Easy Street Quiltville Mystery needs borders….I will put on a dark purple 2 1/2″ inner border and then a 6″ lavendar outer border.  I love the quilt pattern – Bonnie Hunter’s design is wonderful; however I am not fond of the colors.  I don’t plan to keep it though, so it doesn’t really matter, right?

And my Christmas Easy Street also needs borders….I just can’t quite decide what to do yet.  I am thinking about a red inner border and then a piano key multi-colored border?????

Christmas Easy Street

Finally I need to make a back for Nanna’s Surprise – the Quilter’s Club of America Mystery.  My  cat, Cuddles, REALLY LIKES this quilt!!!  I am thinking that I will use more of the Moda Holly Jolly fabric for the back….my favorite back is to cut 12 1/2″ squares and sew them together…but we will see how my creative juices flow!

Dare I get ambitious and say that I also plan to get bindings sewn on two quilts…….???  Maybe not….:)

I am plugging away on my EASY STREET MYSTERY QUILT – designed by Bonnie K. Hunter.  It is a LONG process but I am getting there.  I have now completed the 16 Block A set.

And I have one of the Block B completed (but all of the parts are sewn together – so that will be my project this week!)  I love Bonnie’s Design but I am not fond of these colors at all…..but I will be giving this quilt away so hopefully the recipient will love purple!!!!

NOTE TO SELF:  No more making quilts in colors that you do not like…..life is too short…….LOL…..unless it is for a grandangel…….sigh…..nevermind about that NOTE TO SELF….:)

Just for a break I made ONE BLOCK for a wild and scrappy Trip Around the World Quilt ala Bonnie Hunter’s FREE PATTERNS on her Quiltville website.  I decided to dig out some of my 2 1/2″ strips and put them to good use!
