Frances has been teaching quilting for 8+ years.  I met her during my FMQ research, in 2011, when I attended a FMQ Workshop with Two Wacky Woman.  I found Frances to be an excellent teacher, a wonderful person, and be blessed with a nice senses of humor too!  I enjoyed her class and was delighted when she agreed to be one of the 12 FMQ experts for this challenge.  What sets her apart from other FMQ teachers is her “No frame, stitch regulator, marking or gloves” approach.

Since learning to do my own Free Motion Quilting is one of my goals for 2012 I have been practicing and practicing and practicing my heart leaves.  You can sure tell that I am a beginner….but hey, everyone has to start somewhere!  Some of my leaves are pretty wonky – but I guess that is true with leaves in nature too.

OK – the SECRET is to make the picture SMALLER – sigh……

My Brother Duetta – the quilting sewing machine – kicked the bucket – so until I get get it repaired, I won’t be doing any more leaves for awhile…..but I met my January challenge and I am FEELING GOOD!

Does anyone know – can you do this on a SingerFeatherweight?  I wouldn’t know how to drop the feed dogs!

  1. Yes, you can do it on a Featherweight! I haven’t with mine but only because I haven’t needed to. Instead of dropping the feed dogs, you tape a piece of thin cardboard or something that covers the feed dogs, leaving a hole for your needle to go through. Then you get a similar effect as if your feed dogs had been dropped. Try it out!

Your leaves look very nice for an early effort – great job!!!!

Someone told me I can do it on my little old Bernina I bought when we both lived in CA, Shirley. But they said the only way I can get the stitches to be even is to buy a part that costs 600 dollars. Do any of you ladies know if this is true?

I am not able to answer this question – but $600 seems to be a lot for a part to make the stitches even!
