What we did during Hurricane Irene…..
Posted By drsao on August 29, 2011
We were some of the FORTUNATE ones on the East Coast – just a few trees, branches and leaves spread around. It is pretty amazing given the strong and the sustained rain and winds.
BUT WE WERE PREPARED! We gathered candles, flashlights, and games……and filled the bathtubs with water……..then we just watched and waited…….
How do you prepare for a hurricane?
Well, first you bake a cake…….three layers – chocolate, white colored lavendar, and white. Thanks to Grandangels Leanna and Sarah we did not have to go without cake.
It was yummy…..and I do believe that in all my many years on the face of this earth, I have never eaten lavendar cake before!
It is wise to use up everything in the fridge if possible – because you are almost CERTAINLY going to lose power……..what better way to use yogurt than to give yourself a chocolate facial!!!!
….and of course one MUST EAT ALL OF THE ICE CREAM IN THE FREEZER!
In case you were wondering, ice cream can give you LOTS OF ENERGY!
After the power is off you begin to experience life without computers, tv, cell phones or other modern NECESSITIES that are powered by electricity. I SOMEHOW managed to end up with a washer full of wet towels….but oh well, we had cake!
We ran out to the car to listen to the news and to plug our cell phones in for emergency messages.
We all slept downstairs in case a tree came through the roof on the top floor………it was like CAMPING OUT AT HOME but without the campfire.
Ruby – our dog – is on top of grandangel Sarah – you can see her eyes shining in the pitch black room!
We really survived and had fun – but I must say that lighting the candles, playing games and roaming around with flashlights was way more fun the FIRST 24 hours than it was the LAST 24 hours…..LOL.
I HAD to cook a huge bag of chicken (ALA COSTCO) and so when Grandangel Leanna and her friends wanted food for a picnic, I knew just the thing to serve………coke and chicken – and THREE LAYER CAKE!!!!
Grandangel Sarah is a reader and reads EVERY NIGHT before going to sleep……..look at these cool HEADLIGHTS on her headband. Sarah read right through the hurricane!
Tonight the camping party is over and our electricity is on – and we are APPRECIATING THE LITTLE THINGS IN LIFE again! LOL. I hope everyone else is powered up already or will be soon!
My daughter lives in Petersburg. They were camping it out too! Glad you are all safe!
You definitely had more fun – I had the stomach flu and really did not care where I was or what, if anything, I ate. DWH looked after me and everything else – he was a real trooper – I think it must be real True Love. I loved seeing the pictures of the sleep over and hearing the stories. You could have played flash-light tag – LoL – what a fun time. Judy C in NC – school has started.
Hi! I know this is kind of off topic but I was wondering which blog platform are you using for this website? I’m getting sick and tired of WordPress because I’ve had issues with hackers and I’m looking at options for another platform. I would be fantastic if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.
