My First Meeting of VCQ, May 2011

Posted By on May 16, 2011

The Virginia Consortium of Quilters met in Midlothian, VA in May.   I joined and thoroughly enjoyed my first meeting.  We had great food and wonderful favors  from our host guild – the Country Piecemakers in Powhatan, VA!

I was excited to FINALLY MEET Bonnie Stapleton – my goodness, I have communicated with her in online groups for ages but this was our first REAL LIFE MEETING!!!

Bonnie and Barbara - our Country Piecemaker Greeters

I was in Catherine’s class and it was fabulous (and I am not just saying that because we happen to be friends!)  If she teaches at another meeting, BE SURE TO SIGN UP – you will learn a lot (and more.)

Embellishing and Dimensionalizing Art Quilts

Catherine (yes, she made her jewelry!)

Catherine designed and made her art bracelet

I said you would learn a lot and MORE – and I am serious.  Catherine is a mixed media artist, and she knows a lot about multiple art forms.  In addition, she is FUNNY!

It is amazing what all we did in one day:  we bleached, we spritzed, we ironed, we stamped, we painted, we glittered, we tore, we cut, we sanded, we crumpled, we glued, we sewed – – – and we ate candy (I had my first ever in my whole life MARY JANE)   all in one worshop!

In fact, I felt a bit like Picasso – he once said that it took his whole life for him to learn to draw like a child….and in case you read in French – voila….

“J’ai mis toute ma vie a savior dessiner comme un enfant.”  Picasso

We played, we manipulated, we laughed, we made mistakes, we turned our mistakes into INTENDED art forms…..that was my favorite part – REDEFINING – a wonky stamp job becomes a quirky art form….don’t you love it!  🙂  It was fun because there were NO MISTAKES – just serendipity!

Here are some RANDOM photos from our workshop on Saturday!

ENJOY!
