Country Piecemakers – Powhatan – April 2009 with Mary Kerr
Posted By drsao on April 11, 2009
We had a lot of fun at our Country Piecemaker’s Quilt Guild Meeting tonight in Powhatan, VA. Mary Kerr was our guest and she talked about Motherless Quilts. If you ever get the opportunity to hear her – don’t miss it. (She will be in Williamsburg, VA in September with the Colonial Piecemakers Quilt Guild!)
We really enjoyed her trunk show and I only wish that I could repeat all of the interesting things that she said about these quilts – some of them dating to the 1800’s. Some of them are quilts that were started by her grandmothers (both the nice one and the crabby one)……..some she found in antique stores. What was fascinating was the realization that our foremothers made utility quilts without the help of the modern day “QUILT POLICE.”
They used what they had – their borders were not always square and their fabric was – well let’s say varied. We saw everything from borders made from bed sheets to polyester wonders pieced into these quilts of yesteryear! It was so interesting and entertaining.
We also enjoyed a brief time of guild members’ SHOW AND TELL – but WOWWEEE, was it ever special. Get this, Catherine finished her FIRST QUILT – and it is stellar! I wish that Patsy could have been there to see the fruits of her Melons and Curves Class! The back of Catherine’s FIRST QUILT is really a wonder! AND….if that were not enough, she finished her Bonnie K. Hunter designed SPIDER WEB QUILT.
After all of the quilty fun we enjoyed some pre-Easter goodies. It was really lots of fun! And somehow – I am still not sure how this happened, but somehow I am now in charge of the montly newsletter! Just remember, I have a camera and I am not afraid to use it. LOL 🙂
Enjoy the pictures!
I loved visiting Country Piecemakers.
What a delightful group of ladies!!
Thank you for inviting me!
Mary
We are the lucky ones! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
I really enjoyed looking at all your photos from Mary Kerr’s program. She is awesome! I got some great ideas re: what to do with old damaged quitls or bits and pieces. Keep up the photomania…..:)
