Magnolia Grange – an 1822 Virginia Plantation Home Jewel
Posted By drsao on February 10, 2009
Today Marla and I got a PRIVATE TOUR of Magnolia Grange – a beautiful Virginian plantation home built in 1822. The house is fantastic……when you look at the pictures notice the elaborate woodwork, the plaster motifs on the ceilings, the china, the antique furniture, the toys, the clothing, the dolls, the knitting needles and the old quilts.
I found it particularly interesting to see the list of the names of some of their slaves – they had 60 slaves in this house. There is one coverlet on the bed in the children’s room that is like the one that my grandmother had….it is blue and white (hand woven on a loom.) The crazy quilt is also amazing. I got some close up photos of it…..and every member of the family has their initials in this quilt.
Even though women were not educated (except in the arts – music and needlework) it would have been interesting to have experienced life in the early 1800s……if time travel were possible, I think it would be fun to spend a few days “VISITING” some of these historical homes.
I highly recommend a vist to Magnolia Grange. I surely do appreciate the efforts of historical societies who maintain this history and keep the wonder of it alive for all of us. Marla and I both really enjoyed it. I hope you enjoy the pictures!
