EASY STAR BLOCK
Posted By drsao on August 23, 2009
At VA Scrappers on Saturday, Nancy taught us how to make an easy STAR BLOCK starting with 5 inch squares made into half square triangle blocks! Nancy likes to lightly spray her fabric with starch before working with it.
First put two 5 ” squares together (one square is your background and one square will be the color of your star)……draw a diagonal line across the block. Sew 1/4″ on EACH SIDE of the drawn line.
Cut on the drawn line – open and press. You now have two half square triangle blocks.
Trim so that your HST is now a perfect 4 1/2″ square….
Now cut this HST at 2 1/4″……
YOUR HST WILL NOW be cut into FOUR EQUAL SQUARES 2 1/4″ each
Rotate the squares so that you have formed 1/4 if a star (this reminds me of the spatial task on the Weschler Adult Intelligence Scale – has anyone taken that IQ Test?) Sew the four squares together to form 1/4 of the star.
Put four of these together and you have a STAR BLOCK! You can make this scrappy *I like it this way – or you could use 4 HST using the same fabric to make one star.
The back looks like this….
I really like this and it looks like a great and easy way to make a star block.
I BELIEVE that this technique is included in the NICKEL QUILTS patterns.
